soda fountain accessories

These are the original stools which stood in Peter O’Mara’s Pharmacy at the time when the store sold drinks from a soda fountain. The history of soda fountains, and of soda in general, is tightly intertwined with the history of pharmacy, as soda first emerged as an over-the-counter medicinal product. Although the medical substances were removed by the early 20th century, the popularity of pharmacy-sold sodas continued until as late as the 1970s.

Pharmacies would often also offer treats like milkshakes, egg creams, and ice cream sodas. Along with the soda counter stools, we have many of the original bottles that the flavouring extracts would have come in as part of our More Than Medicine display.
