cod liver oil

This item may bring back some visceral, and perhaps not entirely pleasant, memories for some of you. Cod liver oil has been used for medicinal purposes for many centuries, particularly in the countries of northern Europe such as Scotland and Norway.

However, in the early 20th century, scientists determined that cod liver oil contained high amounts of vitamins A and D, and since it was also easily absorbed by the body, was widely touted as a natural nutritional supplement. Thousands of children from the 30s to the 60s were given doses of cod liver oil to help with muscle, joint, and immune function.

And although all those health benefits are legitimate, the use of cod liver oil has largely declined today because of its infamously strong smell and taste.
